Overview
Push Notifications are a flexible notification method which allows you to send messages to SafeZone app users. They can be incorporated into Notification Templates or Custom Messages. Some key features for push messages are:
- Send to all or User group-based targeting
- Geographic filtering / targeting
- Send in Silent / Vibrate / Standard or Alarm mode
- Include weblinks to further information
- Include a request to share location by Checking In
- Include a Title and Main body
- Add Substitution Tokens for drop-lists
Whether creating and sending a custom message from scratch, or sending a template, the options for Push messages are the same and detailed below.
Configuring the Push Notification
You will need appropriate permissions to edit Notification template settings, see the Access Control guide for more information.
- You can get to the Push information by going to the Notify page and either clicking on "New Blank Message" or selecting a template from the list.
- First select or confirm the message Recipients
- You can then scroll down and expand the push notification options by either
- In a New Blank Message checking the tick box "Send push notifications to users with the application installed"
- In a templated message clicking on the "Advanced View" button
- In a New Blank Message checking the tick box "Send push notifications to users with the application installed"
- Once expanded you will see the full set of options below
Request Check in
| Adds a check-in button to the notification which encourages recipients to share their location |
Applications
Select whether to send to SafeZone, OmniGuard or both application types.
Geolocated Push
A Geolocated push allows you to only display messages to users in a particular area. This relies on SafeZone having permission access to the user's location in the background. If this permission is not granted the message will not be displayed even if the user is in the targeted area. In each scenario the message will be sent to all, but the filtering hides it from the user.
| Scenario | Outcome |
| User is inside the area with background location enabled | The message will be received by the user |
| User is outside the area with background location enabled | The message will be received by the app but hidden from the user and immediately deleted |
| User is inside the area with background location disabled | The message will be received by the app but hidden from the user and immediately deleted. This is because the app was unable to confirm they were in the impacted area |
- Use the checkbox to enable filtering and view the map and check the notes in the yellow box
- Select the most appropriate view to help targeting, either "Map" or "Satellite"
- Use the Search icon at the top-right of the map
to open the Google Maps search tool to find the area you want to filter by.
- Use the Map Capture Icon at the top-right of the map
to enable the selection tool
- Once enabled, you can click and drag to make a free-form rectangle over the targeted area.
- If you have indoor positioning enabled in your system in the targeted area, you can also filter to only send the message to a specific floor.
- NOTE: If a floor level is selected and no floor is detected on the device due to Bluetooth being disabled, the message will not be delivered to that device even if they are on the floor.
Sound options
You can choose whether the notification is:
- Silent
- Silent with vibrate
- Uses default notification sounds for the device
- Uses the Alarm tone sound
Note: The system will NOT override the device's own volume settings. So if a device is put on silent by a user, the default notification sound or alarm tone will be silenced too. This is to protect users who have silenced their phone for safety reasons.
Message Title
The message title will be the most prominent part of the message and can have up to 50 characters
Web Address (Optional)
Provides an "Open Link" button in the notification prompting users to find more information on that page about an incident.
NOTE: This can only be setup if "Request Check-in" is not selected.
Notification Message
The notification message can contain up to 256 characters and for templated messages may include substitution tokens.
If your message has tokens, they will be displayed under the message box (for example: "Campus" below)
You can select the campus using the dropbox selector
Once you have selected the item you will see the message preview below.
If you want to add a new substitution token to the message (for example to add a building list).
- Click into the Notification Message box where you would like to add the token.
- Click on the addition symbol
- Select the token to add
- Use the new dropbox as described above.
